Lules

San Isidro de Lules, or just Lules, is the capital of the department Lules in the Tucumán Province in northwestern Argentina. The municipality ( municipality ) has an area of 163 km ², lies at an altitude of 490 meters and has 28 359 inhabitants (2001, INDEC ). San Isidro de Lules located 20 kilometers south of the provincial capital San Miguel de Tucumán. Geography

San Isidro de Lules lies at the feet of the last foothills of the Sierra de San Javier at Yerba Huasi. The water supply of the city and of the department via the Río Lules, which rises in the nearby mountains.

Climate

History

San Isidro de Lules was founded on November 21, 1851 by the priest Dr. Zoilo Domínguez. On that day, he applied to the diocese permission for the construction of the Iglesia de San Isidro Labrador de Lules. The land on which he wanted to build the church and a small place, he had acquired from Don Márquez Pérez. The priest laid with the map of San Isidro de Lules and determined the location of the Plaza Central, the church and his own house. Zoilo Domínguez witnessed the completion of the church and read the first trade fair. The remains of the town's founder and his family rest in his church.

Economy

The situation in the Quebrada de Lules and climate favor the development of a diversified agricultural production. Lules is one of the most important strawberry producers in the country. Addition, however, blueberries, tomatoes, peppers, citrus fruits such as lemons and oranges, peaches, nectarines and sugar cane are grown.
