Lumbee

Lumbee is the name of an American Indian tribe. The name comes from the Lumbee River Lumber River ( also Lumbee River). Although the Lumbee of white Americans, blacks and Indians descended, they are recognized as an Indian tribe since 1885 in the U.S. state of North Carolina.

Demographics and geographic location

With over 50,000 members, the Lumbee are the eighth-largest Native American tribe of the United States and the largest in North Carolina. They are mainly located in the Countries Robeson, Hoke, Cumberland and Scotland. The economic, cultural and political center of the trunk is the city Pembroke in the state of North Carolina.

State Recognition

The Lumbee are recognized since 1885 by the state of North Carolina as a Native American ethnic group. In 1956, the law was "HR 4656 " or Lumbee Act passed by Congress and signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The Lumbee Act recognized the Lumbee as Indian Aborigines mostly. The strain was, however, not state- recognized Indian tribe holistically and thus had to do without state financial assistance for the most part. The full state recognition for the tribe is under consideration by the legislature.
