Lumen (anatomy)

The lumen, Pl lumens (Latin lumen = " light ", " window ", see Lux = " light ", and in this special meaning only since the end of the 19th century detectable in the language of scholars ) is in biology, the term for the inner or - literally translated - "light " length (also called " clear width " ) of the interior of hollow organs, in contrast to the space on the outside. A lumen is found for example on the inside of the bowel, bladder, blood vessels and the stomach of mammals, in the tracheal system and the gut of insects. In plants, called "Lumen " the cavity of a conductivity cell ( trachea, tracheid, sieve tube ).
