Lumparn

The Lumparn (Finnish Lumpari ) is a large, nearly round, country -free area in the archipelago of the Åland Islands, a largely autonomous province in Finland. It is surrounded by four municipalities that limit the lake: In the East, this is the community Lumparland, in the south Lemland, in the west Jomala and the North Sound, all four of the so-called Fasta Åland ( mainland) and not to the east lying archipelago. include The distance from shore to shore is about 10 km, the water area is about 80 km2. The archipelago, located to the east opening has no land connection closed round about the Lumparn. Only a few, small islands are located in the bay. The deepest depth shall not exceed 35 m and is located near the east coast. The average depth is about 20 meters. The Lumparn is, despite its size and its connection to the small Ålandsee a part of the sea, and must therefore be referred to geographically, not as an inland sea than inland.

Formation

The emergence of Lumparn is attributed to a Meteoroideneinschlag, which should have been 1.2 to 0.5 Giga - years ( Gya ), this corresponds to a Gya 109 years. In Finland, eleven such impacts have been identified. Typical of extraterrestrial impacts are petrological and geophysical or morphological characteristics. The size of the diameter of such impacts in Finland varies between about 1.3 and 23 km, and their age of probably Mesoproterozoikum (~ 1800 mya ) to the Late Cretaceous (~ 73 million years before our era ). The impact Lumparn heard about 9 km in diameter to the average Finnish size.

Geology

Since 1989 Lumparn has been geologically explored in more detail. In the 1997 final report erschienden veteran was detected with an age from 1.59 to 1.57 Gya.

On the northern shore of the Bay part of the land mass has been left out of the glacial erosion and limestone from the time of the Ordovician still has extraterrestrial deposits on. Extra Maritim can be seen only under favorable wind conditions and correspondingly low water level. In other places along the banks of these deposits can be detected by drilling. These deposits consist of quartz, mosaic - arranged like feldspar and other geschmolzenden fragments.

Use

The Lumparn is now a popular and productive fishing grounds as well as an attractive destination for water sports.
