Lupane District

Lupanes is a 976 m high place with 1,600 inhabitants (2006), a district and capital of the province of Matabeleland North with 641,000 inhabitants ( 2002) in Zimbabwe. It lies on the road from Bulawayo to Hwange.

Lupanes is a stronghold of the Movement for Democratic Change. In the last elections, there were nearly 300 people dead and nearly 200 cases of torture among supporters of the MDC by the militias of the ZANU -PF.

Lupanes is a fully embossed rural, semi-arid region that grows out some cotton in the north to Gokwe and the rivers also corn, but this is threatened by the way of overgrazing of arid areas.

Lupanes has several primary and secondary schools, is the seat of lupanes State University, whose construction is scheduled to begin May 2006, and has a hospital.
