Lupeni

Lupeni ( Schylwolfsbach German, Hungarian Lupény ) is a city in Hunedoara County in Transylvania, Romania.

Location

Lupeni lies on the River Jiul de Vest (Western Shield ) between the mountains Retezat in the north and in the south Valcan.

History

A settlement of the region has been shown since the Stone Age. During the reign of the Roman Empire sporadic gold was mined. In the Middle Ages lived in the secluded area only a few shepherds.

Lupeni was first documented in 1770; probably resulted in good pasture grounds towards the influx of residents from the valley of the river Strei.

After 1840 began by mining a massive change in the population and economic structure; Miners from many nations migrated. From 1881 coal reserves have been exploited industrially; There were large housing estates.

In August 1929, there came in the wake of the evolving global economic crisis strikes by miners, which were bloodily suppressed by the government ( 22 dead, 58 wounded).

1941 Lupeni was officially declared a town. After the Second World War the mines were in the vicinity of the city's main coal supplier in Romania.

The one-sided focus on economic mining resulted after the revolution of 1989 to high unemployment, as a part of the mines was closed. Since then, trade, forestry and tourism play an increasing role.

Population

The population figures reflect the economic development of the city: 1850 were in Lupeni, which was then still part of the Kingdom of Hungary, 743 inhabitants registered, of which 735 Romanians and Gypsies 8. In 1920, the population had risen to about 14,500, of which 6,100 identified themselves as Romanians, 5000 Hungarians and 1300 as a German. By 1992, a further population increase was recorded ( 33,000 ). Since then, the population has been declining slowly. As of the 2002 census lived in Lupeni 30 642 people, of whom 26 746 Romanians, 2974 Hungarians, 650 Roma and 148 German.

Traffic

In the Lupeni Built in the early 20th century railway from Petrosani ends. Thither run more passenger trains daily. In addition, runs through the town along the national road 66A of Petrosani after Campu lui Neag.

Attractions

From Lupeni south, a road leads to the recreation and winter sports center Straja.
