Lupeol is a secondary plant substances which belong to the pentacyclic triterpenes. He found, for example in the caper plant Crateva nurvala or the bark of birch trees. Lupeol is known for over a hundred years. Is lupeol as potentially readily available malaria and cancer drug with low toxicity for medical research of interest.

Biosynthesis

Lupeol occurs via the intermediate squalene ultimately from acetyl -CoA. The chemical synthesis is also possible. However, due to a stereochemical problem it is slightly more expensive.

Effects

Lupeol shows in vitro antiprotozoal activity against Plasmodium falciparum. The effect is not yet fully understood and further explored.

Anti-inflammatory properties have been observed and are the subject of further research.

Also inhibit the growth of tumor cells was observed. Various mechanisms have been demonstrated. It is investigated in which cases lupeol is suitable as an adjuvant therapeutic agent.

The antimicrobial effect of lupeol can be measured. Here the substance is regarded as the lead compound for the development of better more effective derivatives.
