Lupercal

The Lupercal was a cave on the Palatine Hill and one of the most important places of worship of the ancient city of Rome. According to the founding myth of Rome where the twins Romulus and Remus were suckled by a she-wolf before 753 BC founded the city.

The Lupercal was at the foot of the Palatine. It has been restored under Augustus. From the Lupercal, the religious festival of the Lupercalia and the priesthood of Luperci deduced.

Italian archaeologists in 17 meters depth discovered a cave in drilling for the Roman palace quarter 2007, suggests that it might be due to the Lupercal, which among others, the head of the Roman archeology authority, Adriano La Regina, but excludes. In his opinion, it is a Nymphaeum, but he also starts from an archeological find.

The partially collapsed cave is decorated with shells and marble. Archaeologists measured the cave with endoscopes and lasers, because they feared that it would further damaged during excavation. The amount is estimated to be eight meters and the diameter at 7.5 meters. For further excavations will soon be looking for the entrance to the holy place.
