Lupo Italiano

Italy

The Lupo Italiano is not a FCI recognized dog breed.

Around 1966 they began in Italy in the area of the mountains of Lazio after Saarloos Wolfdog Czechoslovakian Wolfdog and a further experiment with the intersection Dog and Wolf. As a dog breed a German Shepherd was taken as there was crossed with local wolves. This attempt also did not meet expectations. The problems were the same as in other Wolf-/Hundkreuzungen: A portion was similar to wolves behavior: shy and timid and was the view of the breeder so far unfit. Another part behaved dogs similar and could be adapted for rescue dogs and avalanche search dog. Today the breed is subject to local forest authorities, but do not release the dogs for sale.
