Lupus Servatus

, Also called lupus lupus and lupus Servatus Servatus of Ferrieres, (c. 805; † after 861 ) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Ferrieres -en- Gâtinais, theologian and confidant of the Emperor Charles the Bald. His letters are characterized by high literary quality and are important sources for the history of the Carolingian period.

Life

His father Antelmus emigrated from Bavaria, his mother was Frotilde Franconian Gâtinais. The bishops Heribald and Abbo of Auxerre were his brothers. He joined as a teenager in the monastery Ferrieres -en- Gâtinais in the diocese of Sens one. To 828 he entered the monastery of Fulda, where Rabanus Maurus was his teacher. He was with Einhard and probably also a friend of Gottschalk of Orbais.

To 836 he returned to Ferrieres, where he was supported by the Empress Judith and her son Charles the Bald. 840 he was elected abbot of Ferrieres. In the debate over the rule of the Carolingian Empire after the death of Louis the Pious, Charles the Bald, he remained always faithful and was used by the numerous diplomatic missions.

Works

He wrote several minor theological works, including biographies of St. Maximin of Trier and of the Holy Wigbert. For the Margrave Eberhard of Friuli he put on an extensive collection of legal texts and capitularies. Of his numerous letters have been preserved 132, they were probably edited by his pupils Heiricus of Auxerre. They testify to his high classical education and are influenced by the letters of Cicero. He was particularly interested in philology, he collected manuscripts of ancient authors (Cicero, Boethius, Valerius Maximus, and others), which he commented, had it copied in his scriptorium. His efforts for a copy of the then very rare Vitae Ceasarum of Suetonius witness the letters 10, 4 and 91, 4 He was among the first readers of Einhard's Vita Karoli Magni and expressed the highest admiration for their style (Letter 1, 5), whom he praised as a successful realization of antique style ideals in contrast to other contemporary production and he confirmed even Ciceronian gravitas ( dignity).
