Lura (singer)

Lura ( born 1975 in Lisbon, Maria de Lurdes Pina Assunção actually ) is a singer and composer.

She sees herself as a Cape-Verdean artist, although she was born in Portugal - as the daughter of Cape Verdean parents, her father is from the island of Santiago, her mother from São Nicolau.

Life

Actually wanted to be Lura dancer or a swimming instructor, but then, the foundation stone was laid for her career as a singer at the age of seventeen when Juka - an artist from São Tomé and Príncipe - asked her for an album a duet to sing with him, which was a great success. Then she appeared in productions with artists such as Bonga, Tito Paris, Paulo Flores and Paulinho Vieira. In 1996, she recorded her first CD Nha Vida on his own compositions. In 1997 she took part in the joint project Red Hot Lisbon, involved in a campaign against AIDS the Red Hot Organization, among other famous artists such as Caetano Veloso, Marisa Monte, Djavan, Bonga and Tereza Salgueiro. There were other CD productions and tours throughout Europe. In the film Fado of Carlos Saura Lura sang the piece Morna. Lura is currently one of the most popular musicians in Cape Verde.

2006 Lura received for her album " Di Korpu Ku Alma " the "BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music " in the category " Newcomer".

The compositions are based on traditional Cape Verdean music Lura as Morna, Funaná and Batuku that are mixed with African and modern influences.
