The Lurcher is a hybrid dog from Great Britain and Ireland. It is not a breed of dog in the true sense, but a crossbreeding of two or more breeds, with the participation of greyhounds.

Origin and History

The Lurcher was formerly bred by traveling people in the British Isles for poaching. Its name comes from the thieves Language: Lur = thief. Preference was given to short-haired dogs.

Lurcher caused by wind dogs, mostly greyhounds, with shepherd dogs, for example, Collies or large terriers are crossed. The name Lurcher is valid in the breed only for dogs, which are derived from crosses between a greyhound and a non- greyhound. Crosses between two different wind breeds are called Longdog.

The Lurcher is a bred for a specific assignment, ie working dog form. A standard contemporary purebreds, as practiced in the pedigree dog breeding, does not occur in the Lurcher: It presumably breeds suitable to be re- checked again and again. The crossbred than for hunting prove unsound, also continued to breed them. For these reasons, Lurcher also no uniform appearance. Meanwhile, however, attempts to establish a unified breed standard. Description

The Lurcher is a sighthound, which is up to 77 cm tall and 32 kg in weight, short, semi-long or stock -haired, smooth -fitting coat in all colors and laterally protruding ears can also be set up.

Use
