Luritja dialect

Luritja is a name that refers to the various dialects of the Western Desert language group in Australia, but also across a tribe of Aborigines who speak these languages ​​, as well as on their traditional lands.

The land of Luritja includes areas west and southwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory to the land of Arrernte. In the vicinity of Papunya, including Mount Liebig, country and language are often called Papunya Luritja. It is related to Pintupi from Kintore; it is also likely to be influenced by Arrernte and Warlpiri. Much of the Luritja lived since the 1950s in Papunya, an Aboriginal settlement, and in the 1980s they moved to their traditional lands to enable Kintore.

The areas around Finke and Maryvale, a ranch in the country of Titjikala are often called Titjikala Luritja. The language is similar to Papunya Luritja, but there are noticeable differences, probably due to influences of Southern Arrernte, Pitjantjatjara and Antikirinya, with Pitjantjatjara dominated.

To Kings Canyon is called Southern Luritja, which is identical to Titjikala Luritja. The Luritja to Kintore means Pintupi / Luritja.

The total population of Luritja, including Papunya Luritja, is the third largest of the Central Australian Aboriginal groups after the Arrernte and Pitjantjatjara. The number of living Luritja amounts to several thousand people.
