Lushoto District

Lushoto ( German outdated: Wilhelmstal ) is a city in the East African Tanzania. It is situated in the Usambara Mountains, a mountain range in the north- eastern Tanzania, which is also the namesake of the African violet. Lushoto is the capital of the district Muheza in Tanga Region.

As of the 2002 census, 419 970 were counted in the municipal district of Lushoto.

History

During the German colonial period, Lushoto and the surrounding County in West Usambara was also called Wilhelmstal. Around the year 1900 it was seat of a government station and had about 200 inhabitants. In addition to the county forestry office with a pattern plantation, a surveying office, two inns, six foreign companies as well as post and telegraph agency was created. In the village a police force was stationed with 64 men. A country road linking Wilhelmstal with links to the Usambara.
