Luther (1973 film)

Luther (aka: John Osborne 's Luther ) is a feature film in 1974 by Guy Green, with actor Stacy Keach in the lead role of Martin Luther.

The film covers the period from 1506 to about 1526. It tells the story of a revolutionary-minded knight of the peasantry feels strongly connected. Seven times occurs the said knight and criticized it in his speeches Martin Luther. At the end of the film there is a dispute between the knight and Luther, on the question whether Luther did not betray the rebellious peasants.

Action

Luther's novitiate is over. Now he is a full Augustinian monk. Luther takes the penance in an exaggerated manner, because his fear of God will not let him rest. Once again a few years later, the farmers have ventured an uprising. But the peasant revolt was crushed by the princes. The film was produced by the American Film Theatre in collaboration with the Cinevision Ltée. It was filmed at Shepperton Studios in England.

The film had on 21 January 1974 its U.S. premiere in April 1976 and his England debut.

Historical inaccuracies

  • Johann Tetzel was not in Augsburg at the interview between Luther and Cajetan it.
  • Eck was not the spokesman, who asked Luther in Worms to recant.
  • Stanpitz died in 1524 and thus can not have visited after the Peasants' War Luther.
