Luther Jewett

Luther Jewett ( born December 24, 1772 in Canterbury, Windham County, Connecticut; † March 8, 1860 in St. Johnsbury, Vermont ) was an American politician. Between 1815 and 1817 he represented the state of Vermont in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Luther Jewett attended to 1795 Dartmouth College in Hanover (New Hampshire). After a subsequent medical studies he began to practice as a doctor in Putney. Politically, he joined the Federalist Party, for which he was elected to the House of Representatives from Vermont.

In the congressional elections of 1814, which were held all across the state, Jewett was in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC selected. There he met on March 4, 1815 the successor of William Strong. Jewett completed until March 3, 1817, only one term in Congress. After his political activities in the federal capital Jewett studied theology. After he was ordained as a minister, he held this office 1821-1828 in Newbury. He then returned to St. Johnsbury, his former place of residence, back. There he gave 1828-1823 out the newspaper " Herald Farmers ". From 1830 to 1832 he also published the newspaper " Freemason's Friend". After that he held no other public functions. He died in March 1860 in St. Johnsbury and was also buried there.
