Luther Standing Bear

Luther Standing Bear (* December 1868 in South Dakota USA, † February 19, 1939 in Huntington Park, California, USA) was an American Indian, the chief, teacher, writer, translator and actor was.

Life

Standing Bear belonged to the Oglala Lakota, a part of the stem, which is called by the Americans the Sioux. He was one of the first pupils of the Indian School of Carlisle. In 1902, he joined Buffalo Bill and his Wild West Show toured with through Europe. He later starred in Hollywood films.

In his works, he criticized the white Indian policy and revised the historiography; stronger than Charles Eastman, he calls for the self-determination of the Lakota, and a bicultural education program. About himself and his tribe is somewhat told in the book The Land of Their Fathers.
