Geography

Location

The patch Lutter am Barenberg lies about 7 km northwest of Langelsheim between the northwestern foothills of the Harz mountain range in the south and the mountain grove in the north.

History

Lutter am Barenberg was founded in 956 by Otto the Great as part of the pin Gander home under the name of Lutter. The name derives from the river Lutter flowing here. Today suffix on Barenberge appeared already in 1345, and ministered to the distinction between am Elm, which was only from the 14th century king Lutter. With the Barenberg apparently the northwest corner of the resin was meant, which is a few miles south of Lutterworth. There are three peaks named Beacon Hill, the 321 m above sea level. Religions

In an engraving by Merian the first known church in the village is shown next to the castle Lutter, this was built in 1539. Mid-19th century these had to be demolished because of the danger of collapse, the successor building, today's St. George's Church was inaugurated on the 4th of Advent 1869. For construction of the church Lutter Sandstone near the quarries was used in Ostlutter. However, since these deeply weathered, the spire had to be demolished and replaced in 1953 because of the danger of collapse. During the renovation of 1990-1996 in the interior of the church, the windows were renovated and restored the original ceiling and wall paintings.

The bells of the church are among the oldest in the region. In the smallest of the three bells, she weighs 83 kg, is a beehive bell that was cast in the middle of the 12th century. Because of its inscription it is called Ribernus bell - Ribernus was a priest who is said to have worked in the 10th century in Lutter. The other two Läuteglocken were cast in 1170.

The organ was built in 1869 by the organ builder brothers Euler, the baptismal font was designed by the sculptor Scheppelmann. The stone used for this purpose comes from a quarry near Eilsdorf.

Since 1 January 2012, the Evangelical Church of St. Georg Lutter forms together with the communities in Hahausen, Nauen, Neuwallmoden and Ostlutter the Pfarrverband St. Trinity Neiletal.

1946 Catholic Pfarrvikarie was built in Lutter, 1961 followed by the construction of the church of St. Martin. In 2008, the church was desecrated, today is the nearest Catholic Church in Salzgitter Ringelsheim.

Blazon: "Divided of red and gold; above a golden wolf head, down a heraldic red rose.
