Luxeuil-les-Bains
Luxeuil -les- Bains ( the Luxovium the Romans ) is a town with 7126 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011), in Haute -Saône. It belongs to the district of Lure, is the capital ( chef-lieu ) of the Canton of Luxeuil -les- Bains and the seat of the Municipal Association Pays de Luxeuil.
Geography
Luxeuil -les- Bains is located in the southwestern foothills of the Vosges Mountains, 35 kilometers northeast of Vesoul, 50 kilometers south of Epinal and 50 kilometers north- west of Belfort.
Neighboring communities of Luxeuil -les- Bains Saint- Valbert in the north, Froideconche in the east, Saint- Sauveur in the south, Breuches in the southwest and Hautevelle and Fontaine- lès- Luxeuil in the northwest.
A few miles south is the military airfield Luxeuil -Saint Sauveur.
History
The iroschottische missionary Columban founded end of the 6th century, the later Abbey of Luxeuil, which had its heyday in the 7th century. The cloister from the 15th century and other components from the 17th and 18th centuries have been preserved.
Culture and sights
The Basilica of Saints Pierre et Paul ( parish church since 1840 ) has its origins in the 13th and 14th centuries; of its three towers is only a present, which was renewed in 1527.
