Luzon B. Morris

Luzon Burritt Morris ( born April 16, 1827 in Newtown, Fairfield County, Connecticut, † August 22 1895 in New Haven, Connecticut ) was an American politician and governor of the U.S. state of Connecticut. He was a member of the Democratic Party.

Early years and political rise

Luzon Morris graduated in 1858 at Yale University, then studied law and then got admitted to the bar in 1856. Morris decided in 1855 to pursue a political career. He ran for a seat in the House of Representatives from Connecticut, where he was also active after a successful election. Furthermore, he had been over the years, 1856, 1870, 1876, 1880, and again in 1881 re-elected to this position. He was also 1857-1863 worked as a judge of the Probate Court of New Haven, and 1874-1876 Member of the Connecticut Senate. He also worked in a number of committees, one of these improved Connecticut estate laws. He ran twice, 1888 and 1890, unsuccessfully for the office of governor of Connecticut.

Governor of Connecticut

Morris was elected in 1892 to the Governor of Connecticut. During his tenure, he advocated constitutional changes in the electoral laws, but he was unsuccessful in reaching the appropriate changes. Governor Morris's popularity increased as a result of the dreary financial depression that overwhelmed the state, gradually, so that he not seeking re-election.

After he left his post on January 9, 1895, he returned to his law practice. He was later president of the Connecticut Savings Bank of New Haven.

Luzon B. Morris died on 22 August 1895 and was then buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven. He was married to Eugenia L. Tuttle. The couple had six children together.
