Lviv Oblast

The Lviv Oblast (also Lviv Oblast, Ukrainian Львівська область / Lwiwska oblast, Russian Львовская область / Lwowskaja oblast ) is an administrative unit of the Ukraine in the northwest of the country. It has around 2.54 million inhabitants (2014)

The oblast comprises part of the historic landscape of Galicia, but the villages Pissotschne included ( Пісочне ) Matiw ( Матів ) Salyschnja ( Залижня ) Bodjatschiw ( Бодячів ) Schpykolossy ( Шпиколоси ) Knjasche ( Княже ) and Fussiw ( Фусів ) to end of the existence of Galicia in 1918 not to do so.

Capital is Lemberg; Other cities are Drohobytsch, Tscherwonohrad and Stry. By Oblast run the main traffic route from Ukraine to Slovakia, Austria and Southern Europe.

In the West, the oblast borders Poland ( voivodeships of Lublin and Subcarpathian ). In the north of the Volyn oblast and Rivne, Ternopil Oblast to the east, southeast and south by the oblasts of Ivano- Frankivsk and Transcarpathian region.

In the Oblast live around 5 % of the total population of Ukraine, 60.6 % in urban areas. The population density is around one and a half times higher than in the rest of the country. From the westerly oblasts it is most urbanized. The oblast is rich in water surfaces. Likewise, there are natural gas reserves in 15 deposits.

History

The oblast was created after the occupation of eastern Poland by the Soviet Union as part of the Ukrainian SSR on December 4, 1939 from the eastern parts of the then existing Polish province of Lviv. The oblast was, however, disbanded after the German invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22 in 1941, the area was largely attributable to the district of Galicia and could only after the reconquest of the area to be restored by the Red Army in 1944. In 1959 the south to Drohobytsch Oblast was dissolved and merged with the Oblast.

Policy

In the parliamentary elections in Ukraine in 2012 had the Lviv Oblast, the highest turnout with 67.12 %. The far-right party All-Ukrainian Association " Swoboda " reached there nationwide their most votes with 38.01 % shares.

Geography

Some rivers originate in the oblast, so among other things the Dniester ( Ukr Дністер ) with a length of 1352 km, which flows into the Black Sea. Similarly, flows through the Western Bug ( Ukr Буг ) with a length of 722 km, the Oblast. The bow is further north the border with Poland. Other rivers are the Styx, San and Stry.

Administrative subdivision

The Lviv Oblast is administratively divided into 20 Rajone and 9 directly below the Oblastverwaltung cities. These are the cities Boryslaw, Drohobytsch, Morshyn, Novy Rosdil, Sambir, Stry, Truskawez, Tscherwonohrad as well as the eponymous administrative center of the oblast, the city of Lviv (Ukrainian Lviv ).
