Lwów Voivodeship

The Lviv Voivodeship (Polish: WojewĂłdztwo Lwowskie ) was in the years 1921 to 1939 a province of the Second Polish Republic. The office of the Administrator and the capital was Lemberg.

Statistical data

The province was in the south of Poland and covered an area of 27,024 km ². The population was 2.718 million in 1921, of which 56.6 % Poles, 7.4% Jews, and in 1931 3,127 million, of which 57.7 % Polish and 7.5 % Jewish. The rest of the population consisted mainly of Ukrainians.

September 1939 and its aftermath

In September 1939, German and Soviet troops invaded Poland, the country and the Lviv province itself was divided between the two. The city of Lvov, was the Soviet Union passed by security guarantees for the Polish military and civilians who were not subsequently adhered to and including the eastern part of the province of the Ukrainian Soviet Republic incorporated. After 1945 the eastern part remained in the Soviet Union, the western section ( west of the river San ) works as part of the People's Republic of Poland. Today, the eastern part of the former province belongs to the Ukrainian Lviv Lviv Oblast.
