Lycoming IO-720

Lycoming O -720 is the name of a piston aircraft engine family of the U.S. manufacturer Lycoming. All engines in this series are air-cooled 4-stroke boxer engines, have eight cylinder, a bore of 130.2 mm and a stroke of 111.1 mm. The displacement is thus 11,831 cc. The engine was first approved in 1961 and is still in production today. It comes standard with an injection (letter I in the engine designation ). A variant was equipped with a turbocharger (letter T). A reduction gear is not provided. The Mean Time Between Overhaul located at 1800 h, when used in agricultural aircraft at 1200 h Other engines of the manufacturer with the same bore and stroke are the four-cylinder engines Lycoming O- 360 and the six-cylinder engine Lycoming O- 540.

Variants

  • IO -720: engine with 276 kW ( 375 hp) at 2500 min -1 through 294 kW (400 hp) at 2650 min-1 performance. The engine received on 15 October 1961, the approval and PA - 36 was about when Piper used. The compression is 8.7:1. As a fuel, AVGAS is prescribed.
  • TIO -720: A turbocharged variant with 294-346 kW ( 400-470 hp), which was planned for the Piper PA -35. When the flight tests showed that for the approval of the PA - 35 382 kW ( 520 hp ) engine power required, further development was discontinued.
