Lydenburg

Province

Mashishing (until 2006 Lydenburg ) is a city in the province of Mpumalanga in South Africa. The former name is derived from the Dutch, meaning " city of suffering ." From 1856 to 1857, the then capital of the Boer Republic was Lydenburg Lydenburg Republic.

Mashishing is located on spekboom, a tributary of the Olifants River, at the foot of the Long Tom Pass. 2011, the city had 40,714 inhabitants.

History

Lydenburg was founded in 1849 by a group of Voortrekkers under the leadership of Andries Potgieter. They had to leave because of a malaria epidemic their previous settlement Ohrigstad ( in the north). The city was founded in 1856 capital of the Republic of Lydenburg ( De Republiek Lydenburg in South Africa). 1857 she joined the Republic of Utrecht, where these two republics in 1860 in the Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek ( ZAR ) aufgingen.

Over time, Lydenburg gained influence since it (now Maputo Bay ) was on the wagon route to used as a port Delagoa Bay, which were not controlled by the British authorities. Under President Thomas François Burgers Abraham Espag 1871 began with the road. The first car from the direction of Delagoa Bay arrived in 1874. On February 6, 1873 Schwemmlandgold was discovered; within three months the Lydenburg goldfields were proclaimed.

1880 broke out the first Boer War between Britain and the Republic of Transvaal. A British garrison under Lieutenant Walter Hillyar Colquhoun Long took over the rule of the former Lydenburg to control the goldfields. The city was the starting point from which the 94th Regiment marched to Pretoria Anstruther under the command of Lieutenant. The rest of the garrison was then besieged in Lydenburg. Since 1910, the city is connected to the railway network. 1927 she was awarded the status of a municipality.

On 30 June 2006, the town of Lydenburg was renamed Mashishing.

Population

Mashishing is part of the Thaba- Chweu Township, with a population of 98 387 (as of 2011 ). Of these, 81.60 % Black, 14.53 % White, 2.63% colored and 0.60 % Asian.

Economy

Mashishing is the center of the South African fly-fishing industry as well as agriculture and mining.
