Lydian was spoken in ancient times in Asia Minor, Lydia landscape of the people of the Lydians. It is counted among the Anatolian languages ​​, which are in turn a subset of the Indo-European languages ​​. The Lydian takes within the Anatolian languages ​​a special position and is less closely related to the other languages ​​as this among themselves.

The Lydian language is handed down only very sparse. It is documented by Münzaufschriften from the 7th century BC and about 100 inscriptions and graffiti from the 5th and 4th centuries BC.

For the case of a Lydian alphabet font was used, which is very similar to an eastern Greek alphabet. Opposite to this, it contains some special additional characters for special Lydian lute. The font is in Unicode in the block Lydian and is thus standardized for use on computer systems.
