The lake has a size of 33 km ², making it the largest lake in Halland, although only half of the area lies in Halland. The moraine Fjärås Bräcka impounds 18 kilometers long and 45 meters deep lake to a level of 15 feet above sea level (m ö.h. ).

The lake is drained by the Rolfsån to Kungsbackafjorden. Swimming is possible in Fjärås and Sätila, and elsewhere around the lake. Fishing in the lake is possible, perch and trout are caught.

From Fjärås Bräcka Kungsbacka is supplied with drinking water. The raw water from the lake is filtered and mixed with groundwater.

Previously operated the steamship ISA with daily tours various trips at the lake. Since 2012, driving a new electric ship, the ISA af Lygnern, tourist tours.
