Lygodactylus

Yellow-headed Dwarf Gecko ( Lygodactylus picturatus )

The genus Lygodactylus, which comprises about 60 species, all of which, such as the genera Phelsuma and Sphaerodactylus, are diurnal belongs to the family of geckos ( Gekkonidae ) on. The small geckos, which are also called " dwarf gecko ", reach than adult animals only total lengths of 4 to a maximum of 9 cm.

Mainly, the lizards are found in Africa and Madagascar, but there are also two species in South America.

Lygodactylus picturatus

The yellow-headed Dwarf Gecko (L. picturatus) is probably one of the most geckos of this genus in domestic terrarium, occurs in coastal areas of East Africa and is a pure tree dwellers. The males of this species are slightly larger than females and are colored much more conspicuous. While females have a beige -gray body color with scattered patches, the body of the male is blue-gray colored with a bright yellow head ( see illustration).

Lygodactylus kimhowelli

Lygodactylus kimhowelli is the scientific name. There are several competing German names, but they are not unique (eg yellow-headed gecko, yellow head - tail gecko adhesive strips or dwarf gecko ).

The animals are good 7 inches long and can usually be easily kept in pairs. The best in terrariums with a minimum size of 30x30 (LxW) in the base, the height is variable. Males and females are different (black males, females gray striped) on the coloration of the throat. In the terrarium a moderately humid climate (25-30 ° C, 40-60 % [ daytime ] to 80 % [ at night ] relative humidity) is preferred. Eaten are small insects ( crickets, spiders, crickets, 6-8 prey every two days) and as an extra every now and then fruit puree ( mashed bananas, convenience foods for children, etc.).
