Lyman Trumbull

Lyman Trumbull ( born October 12, 1813 in Colchester, Connecticut, † June 25, 1896 in Chicago, Illinois ) was an American politician of the Republican Party. From 1855 to 1873 he sat for the U.S. state of Illinois in the U.S. Senate.

Biography

Trumbull was born in Colchester, Connecticut. After graduating from Bacon Academy, he worked 1829-1833 as a teacher. At the age of 20 he moved to Georgia, where he studied law. He was then finally also approved attorney. In Greenville then he worked in a private law firm. In 1837 he then moved to Alton.

1840 Trumbull was elected to the House of Representatives from Illinois. Between 1841 and 1843 he served as Secretary of State of Illinois. In 1848 he was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of Illinois, where he served until 1853. In 1854 he was finally elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. However, before he could begin the mandate, he was chosen by the Illinois General Assembly in the U.S. Senate, where he took up work in 1855. During his tenure, he felt party memberships or the like is not bound. If it was the case, he also worked with the senators from other parties. Between 1861 and 1872 he sat in front of the influential United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary as chairman. This period also saw the discussion and adoption of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution fell. Trumbull is one of the co-authors.

During the impeachment of Andrew Johnson to Trumbull bothered because, among other things Benjamin Wade manipulated evidence against Johnson to prove the guilt of Johnson.
