Lyn Christie

Lyn Christie ( born August 3, 1928 in Sydney when Lyndon Van Christie ) is an Australian jazz bassist, bandleader and high school teachers.

Life and work

Christie grew up in New Zealand; his father was a saxophonist and church musician, and his mother played the piano. Self-taught, he had his first appearances at parties, then first with Martin Winiata and Julian Lee radio appearances. For his medical studies he went to Australia and played for a while only irregularly jazz. In 1961 he came to Sydney to work as a doctor, but was soon a member of the local music scene. He led his own quartet and participated in recordings of Errol Buddie (1963) and Judy Bailey ( 1964) with. 1965 Christie moved to New York City, where he practiced until 1968, initially as a doctor in Yonkers; next he performed with bands and studied in 1968/69 at the Juilliard School of Music.

Christie played since, inter alia, with musicians like Patti Bown, Al Cohn / Zoot Sims, Ted Curson, Chico Hamilton, Ahmad Jamal, Jaki Byard, Chet Baker, Paul Winter, Freddie Redd, Tal Farlow; He also worked in the big bands of Thad Jones / Mel Lewis and Buddy Rich and various symphony orchestras. He played many years, every Tuesday with the trio of harpist Daphne Hellman, with whom he was in Asia on tour, the jazz club The Village Gate. In the early 1970s he also worked with Toshiko Akiyoshi and Attila Zoller and guested on the Colorado Jazz Party. From 1973, he led his own formations in which, inter alia, Randy Brecker, John Scofield, Walter Bishop, Jr. and Vic Juris played.

In the 1970s, he became increasingly active as a music teacher, first at the Westchester Conservatory, where he was a member of the Westchester Philharmonic Orchestra and since 1980 the annual June Jazz Festival initiated; until his retirement, he worked as head of jazz degree program. He has also taught in Scranton (Pennsylvania) to schools and the University of Scranton, 1978-1990 at Mercy College and from 1989 to 1995 at Lehman College. He was also active as a composer of several film scores. Christie is president of the Society Jazz Resources, Inc., and author of the textbook " Basic Concepts for the Bass Player".

After his retirement, he joined with his Lyn Christie Jazz Trio regularly performs in clubs and at concerts in the New York area.
