Lyncina

Cowrie ( Lyncina aurantium )

Lyncina is a widespread and frequently occurring genus of the family of cowries ( Cypraeidae ). The distribution area extends from the east coast of Africa over almost the entire Indian Ocean to the South Seas ( Indo-Pacific ).

Features

The outer shape is pear-shaped ( pyriform ), only Lyncina lynx soaked with her stretched body on it. The species of this genus have all the same characteristic features of the shell and the radula. The sheath is the sheath that covers the housing and has in this genus arborizing papillae that otherwise occur only in the genus Leporicypraea. The radula is a kind of tongue, with which the animal takes in food and consists of several rows of " Hautzähnchen ". In all species of this genus is the middle " Hautzähnchen " dome-shaped.
