The Aéroport Lyon Saint Exupéry (English Saint- Exupéry International Airport, formerly Aéroport Satolas ) is located about 20 km east of Lyon on the territory of the municipality Colombier- Saugnieu in France. The airport is named after the aviation pioneer and writer Antoine de Saint- Exupéry.

History

The first studies on the construction began in 1965. Ahead for the realization was officially commissioned by the government of France in February 1968. Three criteria had the choice of location of the new airport underlain:

  • It was necessary that the airport of Lyon and especially large cities in the Rhône -Alpes region is easily accessible.
  • He must have technical features that were essential for airport platform ( nature of the terrain, wind orientation ...) and

In 1969, the labor costs were estimated at 300 million francs. It was financed half by the state, a third took over the industrial and Lyon Chamber of Commerce and one sixth of the cost was borne in equal parts by the General Council of the Rhone and the Urban Community of Lyon.

On April 12, 1975, the airport of Lyon- Satolas by the then President of the French Republic, Valéry Giscard d' Estaing in the presence of Pierre dOueil ( Prefect of the region) and Fernand Blanc (President of Industry and Commerce of Lyon) was opened.

On April 20, 1975, the first 150 passengers from Paris Coming landed with Air Inter in Lyon.

On 29 June 2000, the airport was renamed and given the name of the famous pilot and writer Antoine de Saint- Exupéry.

Lyon Saint -Exupéry Airport has received more than six million passengers in 2001, almost four times more than in 1975 and established itself as an essential factor stimulation of the regional economy.

Course for the future

Since 1989, the Industry and Commerce of Lyon has developed in collaboration with the State and local authorities a major investment program to increase capacity of the airport of Lyon Saint -Exupéry. In order to meet the international requirement, the train station Lyon -Saint -Exupéry TGV was put into operation in July 1994.

The creation of a second start and runway, the expansion of terminals, the construction of a covered parking area, the increase of freight terminals are also realizations, which allow the airport Lyon enabled to cope with the strong growth in traffic.

Development of transport

From Lyon Saint -Exupéry more than 100 direct flights are included. The development of the airport has been particularly influenced by the major capacity expansion, increased frequentation and in part by the by the airline Air France as a " hub" ( hub ) used location.
