The M48 motorway (English for, highway M48 ') is a 12 -mile motorway in England and Wales, which connects these two countries over the old Severn Bridge.

This highway was built in the 1960s or as part of the M4 and was opened in 1966 along with the Severn Bridge. Due to the ever increasing traffic over the bridge, which was the bottleneck of the motorway connection from London to Wales, was planned since 1948 a second bridge across the Severn Estuary, which was opened in 1996 as the Second Severn Crossing to the south. The M4 was moved there and so the M48 motorway, which serves as an escape route in the event of a blockage of the newer bridge was built.
