The M6 motorway (English for, M6 Motorway ') is the longest highway in the United Kingdom.

The M6 is 232 miles ( 373 km ) long and connects the M1 motorway at rugby with Carlisle near the Scottish border. The M6 is, depending on how you count, one of the most heavily traveled highways in the United Kingdom.

History and characteristics

The first part of the motorway near Preston was opened by Prime Minister Harold Macmillan on December 5, 1958. This part of the M6 argues with the first section of the M1 for the title of the first motorway in Britain. The first part of the M6 was indeed formerly done, but very short and it was not long built.

Between Shap and Tebay share the both directions and a road runs between the two lanes, without that there is a driveway at the site.

The last 6 miles ( 9.7 km ) long section between Carlisle and the Scottish border (connection to the motorway A74 (M)) was opened on 5 December 2008 and therefore the so-called " Cumberland Gap " was closed.

Planned extensions

The A556 (M) link road will connect the M6 with the M56 to Manchester. The plan approval procedure for this road has been going on for many years.
