Ma Su

Ma Su (Chinese马 谡/马 谡, Pinyin Mǎ Sù ), stylized Youchang (幼 常; * 190, † 228 ) was a strategist of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms in ancient China.

Life

Ma Su was born as his four brothers from Yicheng (宜城). The Ma brothers were known for their intelligence, especially Ma Sus older brother Ma Liang did show up. The two served Liu Bei from about 205 when the was still a guest Liu Biao.

Zhuge Liang was impressed by Ma Sus skills and strategies. Liu Bei but warned him until his death (223 ) that Ma Su was not as intelligent as he seemed. Nevertheless, Zhuge Liang still thought highly of Ma Su and closed it deep into his plans.

As Zhuge Liang prepared his Northern Expeditions against Wei, held many generals Wei Yan and Wu Yi (吴 懿) for the most appropriate commander, but Zhuge Liang Ma Su in charge instead.

Ma Su faced the Wei General Zhang He in the Battle of Jieting contrary, but could be surround by him and was defeated. Zhuge Liang was disappointed and angry and let Ma Su imprison, to later execute him, but in the dungeon Ma Su ill and died.
