Maa languages

The Lotuxo -Maa languages ​​are a subgroup within the Eastern Nilotic languages ​​in the Nilo-Saharan language family. It comprises eight languages ​​, which are spoken in various parts of East Africa, and is divided into the Lotuxo group ( spoken in South Sudan ) and the Ongamo -Maa Group ( Kenya and Tanzania).

  • Lotuxo Lotuxo - also called Otuho or Lotuko, in the south of Sudan, Torit District, about 135,000 speakers
  • Dongotono - in South Sudan, southeast of Torit, about 6,200 speakers
  • Lango - in South Sudan, Torit District, about 20,000 speaker → not to be confused with the Lango, which is spoken in Uganda
  • Lokoya - in South Sudan, Torit District, about 40,000 speaker
  • Lopit - in South Sudan, northeast of Torit, about 50,000 people

  • Ongamo -Maa Maa - the language of the Maasai and Samburu, in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, a total of about 880,000 speakers
  • Ongamo ( Ngasa ) - in Tanzania, eastern foothills of Kilimanjaro, only a few speakers
