Maan Sassen

Emmanuel Marie Joseph Antony ( Maan ) Sassen ( born September 11, 1911 in 's- Hertogenbosch, † December 20, 1995 ) was a Dutch politician.

Life

Emmanuel Sassen studied after high school at St. John's Lyceum in 's- Hertogenbosch Law and earned his JD. Between 1936 and 1950 he worked as a lawyer and prosecutor. In 1939 he became a deputy of the province of North Brabant. He retired in 1946 and was in the same year for the Catholic People's Party ( KVP ) elected to the First Chamber of the States General. In 1948, he resigned from Parliament and was for about a year Dutch Minister for the Colonies. 1952 to 1958 he was a member of the second chamber of the Dutch Parliament. He is also a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the European Coal and Steel Community, the European Parliament. In the European Parliament he is the first leader of the EPP.

In 1967 he was elected as European Commissioner. He succeeded Hans von der Groeben as commissioner for competition after. 1970 ended his tenure in the Commission Rey, his successor as competition commissioner was Borschette, as a Dutch commissioner of the later President ( 1972-73 ) Mansholt.

1970 to 1976 he is a permanent representative of the Netherlands to the European Economic Community ( EEC). In 1986 he was awarded the Robert Schuman Medal.
