Maaria

Maaria [ mɑ ː riɑ ] ( Sw S: t Marie) is a former municipality in Finland and now part of the city of Turku. The area of Maaria located in the north of the urban area to the south of the district Paattinen and includes the districts of Jäkärlä, Saramäki, Turku airport and Yli- Maaria. It has about 6,000 inhabitants and is characterized still rural in nature.

The area of Maaria has been inhabited since the Iron Age. Mid 15th century, one of the Virgin Mary (hence the name Maaria ) consecrated stone church was built in the village Räntamäki. The parish was named Räntämäki and included Paattinen as a chapel community. The community Maaria was founded in 1868 as part of the separation of the management of the rural communities of the church administration.
