Maarten Altena

Maarten van Altena Regteren ( born January 22, 1943 in Amsterdam) is a Dutch composer and double bass player.

Life and work

Altena studied at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam bass ( completion 1968). After 1980 he studied composition with Robert Heppener.

Since 1968 he has played in various music ensembles of classical music and jazz. Apart from the Nederlands Ballet Orkest the jazz groups of Marion Brown, Hans Dulfer and Theo Loevendie and later by Willem Breuker and Burton Greene were. In the early years he played in the Orkest De Volharding and Instant Composers Pool Tentett by Misha Mengelberg. Since the mid- 1970s, he improvised with Derek Bailey, Paul Lovens and in the Vario project by Günter Christmann, later also with Peter Kowald and the North European melody and improvisation orchestra by Sven -Åke Johansson. Addition, however, he also gave solo concerts with improvisations and original compositions. Together with Michel Waisvisz he organized several concert series.

In 1978, Altena his own group, first as a quartet, which was expanded staff in the 1980s and Maarten Altena Ensemble (now MAE ) was renamed and increasingly distant from the Jazz in their performances and performed complex works with improvisation shares. He focused increasingly on composing, but also suggested that other composers have written for the group. In 1997, he stopped to play in his own ensemble, where he worked only as a "musical choreographer ." Since 2005, he writes primarily for other groups.

Prizes and awards

In 1978 he received the prestigious Wessel Ilcken Prize jointly with Waisvisz.
