Maarten van Heemskerck

Martin van Heemskerck (* 1498 in Heemskerk, † October 1, 1574 in Haarlem, . Actually Martin van Veen, Dutch Maarten van Heemskerck, Maerten van Veen born or Marten Heemskerk van Veen Jacobszoon ) was a Dutch painter and draftsman of Mannerism.

Work

Against the will of his father, who was a farmer, van Heemskerck went to Haarlem Cornelis at Willemsz into teaching. 1527 he moved to Jan van Scorel, from whom he learned so much that art historians do not know exactly of a number of paintings, whether or van Heemskerck van Scorel have created them.

Italy, 1532-1536

Return to Haarlem

Van Heemskerck was a leading member of the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke, the guild of painters. He was also from 1553 to his death in 1574 Master of the Church of St. Bavo Church in Haarlem.
