Maassluis

( Listen? / I ) Maassluis is a municipality and a city in the Netherlands, province of South Holland. It has 31 956 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013). Their total area is about 9.1 km ².

Location and economic

Maassluis is located on the New Waterway, not far from 1997 is built Maeslant storm surge barrier. East of Maassluis is Vlaardingen, to the north the municipality of Westland, whose horticultural products are transported through the port of Maassluis or by truck.

The city lies on the iron and motorway between Rotterdam and Hoek van Holland / Europoort ( Rotterdam Vorhafenanlagen in the North Sea ). Therefore Maassluis has many businesses that depend on this port operations, including Workshops where ship components are manufactured and repaired.

History

Maassluis was before about 1600 part of Maasland, which is now a village in the municipality of Midden- Delfland. To 1602 the present city core built on a small artificial island, which was created as a ski jump in the liberation war against the Spaniards. The place that never received official city rights, lived in the 17th and 18th centuries on fishing and between 1800 and about 1970 of the shipping industry. Especially towage in Maassluis was world famous. These companies, like Smit- Tak, and Wijsmuller (now part of the Danish Maersk Line) have now established themselves elsewhere.

In Maassluis Dutch author Maarten 't Hart was born on 25 November 1944. His works can also be read in German translation.

Attractions

In the small town center lies the " Great Church " (built 1602) out. Inside this church is a picturesque organ from the year 1733 by Redolph Garrelts, a student Arp Schnitger. In the City Museum there is to know about Maarten 't Hart and information about the city's history to experience.

Very interesting is the Museum of the Towage ( Nationaal Museum Sleep Vaart ). In the harbor, the old steamboat " fury ", a 1916 -built tug, with which you can make a round trip in the summer.
