Maay (Af - Maay, Maay - Maay also ) is a variant of Somaliland, which is spoken mainly in southern Somalia.

It differs substantially from the spoken to the north variant Maha Tiri / Af - Maxaa, upon which the standard Somali. Among the speakers of the Maay include the communities of Rahanweyn, the Somali Bantu and other groups that are also described as Sab. Information on the number of speakers vary from 594,000 to 1.5 million. Dialects Tunni, Jiidu, Dabarre and Garre be regarded partly as dialects of Maay, partly as an independent Somali dialects.

Since the Maay has certain phonetic differences to the standard Somali, was a separate Verschriftung with the Latin alphabet, the so-called Maay alphabet (Alif Maay ), developed.

According to the Somali Transitional Constitution of 2004, Somali, Maay with as Maha Tiri, an official language of Somalia.

Differences to the Somalian default language

Unlike the Somali Maay the default language knows the lute X / ħ / and C / ʕ / not. B, D, G and N are clearly spoken but not double- written; only LL and RR occur as double consonants. The lute P, JH, GH, NG and YC (also NY or GN) / ɲ / occur only in Maay.
