Mac OS X Panther
Mac OS X 10.3 " Panther" is the fourth version of the operating system Mac OS X from Apple. It is the successor to Mac OS X 10.2 "Jaguar" and the predecessor of Mac OS X 10.4 " Tiger". Apple released "Panther" on 24 October 2003.
The latest version is 10.3.9, published on 15 April 2005.
Innovations
Apple introduced Mac OS X 10.3, more than 150 new functions:
- Finder, with a new Metal design, a new search feature, customizable sidebar
- Support for compressed files (. Zip)
- Fast user switching without logging
- Exposé, clear arrangement and selection of windows by pressing
- TextEdit reads documents from Microsoft Word (. Doc).
- Xcode, an integrated development environment with new gcc compiler version 3.3.
- Program "Preview" with faster PDF viewer
- QuickTime with new video codecs
User Functions
- New Font Management
- FileVault encrypted home directories
- IChat AV for video conferencing.
- X11 server
- Safari Internet browser as a replacement for Internet Explorer
System
Panther is the last Mac operating system that is not running on Intel- Macs.
- PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor running at 233 MHz
- 128 MB RAM (512 MB recommended)
- 1.5 GB of free space on the hard disk
- CD drive for installation
Video conferencing will need:
- 333 MHz or faster PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
- Broadband Internet connection (100 kbit / s or faster)
- Compatible FireWire DV camera or web camera
Panther support for old Mac OS 9 programs in a kind of emulation, called the Classic environment.
