Macarius Magnes

Macarius Magnes ( the Magnesians, also Macarius or - correct - Macarius Magnes ), author of a formed between 300 and 400 AD apology for Christianity, entitled Apokritikós e monogenés. Not to be confused with the Church Father Macarius the Egyptian. Whether it is the Bishop Macarius of Magnesia, who appeared on the oak Synod of 403, is very uncertain.

Dating and person of the author are still controversial. Content and the edition of the Bible used by the author have Asia Minor as Abfassungsort. The Trinitarian terminology used makes a creation of the whole work before the last quarter of the 4th century unlikely ( Trinitarian disputes), but it could be older material have been processed.

Apology

The plant defenses in the form of a dialogue with a heathen rationality and ethos of Christianity, incarnation, divine unity ( " Empire " ) and bodily resurrection against the philosophical critique of the tradition of non-Christian philosophy.

So far there several translations of the shorter " pagan " parts of the dialogue that might go back to another author ( Porphyry? ), In any case differ stylistically strong. A much -awaited German translation of the entire work is in preparation.

Under the name of Macarius Magnes, there are also parts of a Homily on Genesis, but which for about 100 years no longer assigned to the same author in the German research.
