MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Ltd.. is a Canadian company in the electrical, air and space technology, headquartered in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. The company develops and manufactures electronic systems for civil and military aviation and aerospace industry. The company employs over 5,000 employees in addition to its headquarters at 18 locations worldwide. The company is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

History

The company was founded in 1969 by John MacDonald and Werner ( Vern ) Dettwiler in British Columbia. It began with the development of complex electronic components that were developed and produced according to customer's requirement. Another corporate job was the data processing and in particular the information processing for various space agencies, both civilian as well as military applications. Over the years the company has developed a wide range of information processing as well as electronic, operational systems. In July 2000, the company went public. In 2008, the Canadian government blocked the sale of the company to the U.S. aerospace company Alliant Techsystems ( ATK ). In June 2012, the takeover of the U.S. aerospace company Space Systems / Loral by MDA was announced. The transaction is valued at approximately $ 875 million and should be completed by fall 2012. The acquisition MDA becomes one of the largest satellite manufacturers. On 2 November 2012, the U.S. regulatory authority gave its consent to the acquisition.
