Macedonians (Greeks)

Greek Macedonians (Greek Macedones Μακεδόνες ) are the Greek-speaking inhabitants of the countryside Macedonia and the region of Macedonia in northern Greece.

They are also called Macedonians or Macedonians, and these terms are misleading, because they are used in English for the Slavic Macedonians.

Because of the Hellenization of the ancient Macedonians, today's Greek Macedonians see as their cultural heritage. These represent 2.5 million people, about a quarter of the population of Greece. While the region has experienced a significant increase of Pontic Greeks after the genocide of the Ponto Greeks and the Asia Minor disaster, so wandered a significant number of Macedonians in the 19th and 20th century for economic reasons. Since then, significant foreign communities are located in the USA, Canada and Australia. The city of Melbourne recorded the largest foreign community with 250,000 members.
