Macedonio Melloni

Macedonio Melloni ( born April 11, 1798 in Parma, † August 11 1854 in Portici, near Naples ) was an Italian physicist.

Life

Melloni has worked primarily via thermal radiation, also magnetism of rocks, electrostatic induction and photography.

He was awarded the Rumford Medal in 1834 of the Royal Society. From 1835 he was a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences, in 1839 foreign member of the Royal Society. Melloni was the first director of 1841 opened Vesuvius Observatory ( Osservatorio Vesuviano ), the first volcanological Institute of the World. In 1842 he received the Prussian Order Pour le Mérite.

Melloni died in 1854 from cholera.
