Machault (Ardennes)

Machault is a commune with 504 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Ardennes department in the Champagne-Ardenne region in the canton of Machault. It is the capital of the canton.

Geography

The department of roads 980 and 23 intersect in the city.

History

In World War Machault was occupied on 2 September 1914 to 11 October 1918 by German troops. The still remaining civilian population was forcibly evacuated on 6 June 1917. The first villagers returned to the village on 18 October 1918. The church of the village of Saint Pierre was provided in 1919 under monument protection.

The population of the parish was 1962 523 people, rising to 1968 to 551 persons. The number of inhabitants then dropped to 1999 to 437.

Personalities

The French composer and poet Guillaume de Machaut ( 1300-1305 *, † 1377 ) was born in Machault. The French physician Jean -Baptiste Caqué (1720-1787) was born in Machault.
