History

In July 1419, the Portuguese discoverer João Gonçalves Zarco and Vaz Tristão Perestrelo entered in the bay of Machico first time the bottom of the island of Madeira.

The King D. João I distributed as part of the colonization of the island (1420-1425) the country to its deserved three captains. Tristão Vaz was appointed captain of the eastern part of the island, based in Machico, Perestrelo received the captain District Porto Santo, and João Gonçalves Zarco was awarded the Southwest half of Madeira, which he managed from Funchal. The captains had far-reaching powers: they could levy taxes on the land, sugar mills, ovens and salt and they were handed over to fallow soils in its sole discretion to landowners for use. Machico soon developed into a center of sugar cane cultivation, but could not keep pace, where the most suitable for the sugar cane soils were with the city of Funchal.

1494 came only a fifth of the harvest from the Legatsgebiet Machico. When the Portuguese crown in 1497 Madeira directly subordinate to the king, Funchal had long since overtaken the rival economically.

Machico received on 2 August 1996, the city rights and thus became the second city of the island.
