Machine Head (English for tuning machine ) is the sixth studio album by the English hard rock band Deep Purple. It was recorded in December 1971 in Montreux, Switzerland and released in March 1972. The recordings took place in the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio. Many music critics see the album as one of the most important pioneers of the heavy metal genre. It was next to Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin IV and Black Sabbath's Paranoid as "Holy Trinity " ( Trinity) referred to the Hard Rock.

Machine Head is probably the most successful mainly because of the world-famous song " Smoke on the Water " Deep Purple album. It arrived in Germany and the United Kingdom at number one in the United States and in seventh place in the charts. Addition to this publication, nor the applicable today as classics of the genre title " Highway Star ", " Lazy " and "Space Truckin ' " included.

The album was a tremendous sales success. On October 13, 1986, attained the double - platinum status. 2001 listed the Q magazine album of the 50 Heaviest Albums of All Time.
