The owner-managed Machold Rare Violins, based in Bremen was the world leader in the trading of old string instruments.

The company was founded in 1861 in Neukirchen Mark as violin factory. Holders was born in 1949 and once at Castle Eichbüchl at Katzelsdorf (the castle was sold in the course of bankruptcy proceedings ) live Dietmar Harry Joachim Machold. Machold had offices in Vienna, Zurich ( violin Machold GmbH and Cadenza AG), Alpnach ( Bomalu AG ), Bremen, Berlin, New York City, Aspen, Chicago, Seoul and Tokyo and traded among other violins by Stradivari and Guarneri del Gesù.

2001 Machold Rare Violins has sold a violin by Guarneri del Gesù for 1.6 million U.S. dollars to a group of sixteen investors. In spring 2007 Machold redeemed for the sale of four Stradivari over 10 million euros.

Personal bankruptcy

On 22 October 2010 Dietmar Machold initiated reorganization proceedings with self-administration a about his private fortune. The self-administration in the process Machold was revoked by the court on December 1, 2010. A creditors' committee was appointed on December 29, 2010, the court, the procedure was changed to a bankruptcy case. The closure of the company has been positioned on February 4, 2011.
